Königstein
The Place
Königstein is an impressive sight from the Elbe. The town spreads over a length of several kilometres into the valley of the River Biela. The towering fortress Festung Königstein is the symbol of the town. As the Königstein rock was considered impregnable, the Saxon electoral princes and kings used the fortress as a refuge in times of peril, and as a safe place to keep art treasures and the state coffers. Due to the impressive scenery, the Königstein fortress was similarly a popular place for magnificent festivities of the royal court. Later, however, it was also a feared state prison.
Sightseeing Tips
Climb to the Pfaffenstein rock (427 metres) with the 43-metre Barbarine rock needle, the Gohrisch rock (448 metres) and the Papststein rock (451 metres) – and enjoy fantastic views in all directions.

You can reach Königstein with the regular services „Saxon Swizerland“, „Elbe Valley Cruise“ and „National Park Line“.
