Bad Schandau
The Place
The theories of Sebastian Kneipp had great influence on this health resort in the Kirnitzschtal valley. The first bathing house, with 8 baths and 9 tubs, was established in 1798 after the springs became famous throughout the whole country. Visit the St. Johanneskirche church, where an altar dating from 1572 and a sandstone pulpit hewn from a single block of stone can be seen.
Sightseeing Tips
The "Ostrau lift", an electric elevator, whisks you up to Ostrau, a valley-top district belonging to Bad Schandau. From here, hiking trails take you to the Schrammsteine, a wild and daunting rock formation. The trams of the Kirnitztalbahn, on the other hand, take you in more leisurely fashion along the floor of the Kirnitzschtal valley to the Lichtenhainer Waterfall, the start of the Flössersteig nature trail through wildly romantic gorges along the Kirnitzsch river.
Boat Connections
You can reach Bad Schandau with the regular services „Saxon Swizerland“, „Elbe Valley Cruise“ and „National Park Line“.
In addition, the „Schrammstein Cruise“ begins in Bad Schandau.
